Epidural Injection Q & A

What are the benefits of an epidural injection?

An epidural injection contains a mixture of an anesthetic (numbing agent) and steroid medications. By injecting this solution into the epidural space in your spine, you experience immediate, long-lasting pain relief. Epidural injections are beneficial because they:

  • Minimize inflammation and swelling
  • Effectively resolve burning, aching, and electrical pains
  • Won’t inhibit your daily functions (as with prescription painkillers)

At Pain Management of Oklahoma, epidural injections are the primary treatments for back pain.  Epidural injections are also highly beneficial for resolving many other pain-causing ailments, including spinal stenosis, herniated disc, and arthritis, to name a few.

What can I expect during an epidural injection appointment?

Pain Management of Oklahoma provides safe and effective epidural injection treatments in a relaxed environment. During your treatment, Dr. Henderson or Dr. Halford have you lie comfortably on the exam table on your stomach directly under the X-ray machine.

Your doctor cleanses your treatment area with an antiseptic solution and may numb the injection site with a local anesthetic. This may cause some slight stinging or burning, but any discomfort quickly subsides as the numbing agent reaches your nerves.

Using X-ray guidance, your physician places a small needle into the epidural space of your spine. This may lead to some temporary pressure, but shouldn’t cause pain.

The next step involves injecting an X-ray dye into the area to ensure the needle is in the proper location. After your doctor confirms the needle is in place, he injects the epidural steroid solution.

While the injection itself takes just a few minutes, you’re going to stay under observation for about half an hour to ensure you don’t have any negative side effects. You can rest comfortably in the recovery room and then have someone drive you home. It’s important to rest and take it easy for the rest of the day.

How long does an epidural injection last?

An epidural injection is one of the most in-demand treatments offered at Pain Management of Oklahoma because it provides lasting relief. You may need a series of about three epidural injections, each spaced three or four weeks apart, to experience maximum pain relief. Epidural injection treatments can provide relief for several months or sometimes permanently.

Pain Management of Oklahoma provides epidural injections to relieve the most unbearable back pain (or other pain). Book your epidural injection appointment online or over the phone with the office nearest you today.
